Thanks for the sweet responses to my letter about making music with Henry last week. I had no idea people would appreciate it. Well, my mom told me people would, but I didn’t believe her? Even though she’s always right? What’s wrong? With me?
The show we were preparing for as I wrote that letter was great. Free Range were tight and powerful. Sofia’s lyrics and singing shone through. They closed the show with “Burned” by Neil Young and invited the Henry True band, Minor Moon, VV Lightbody, Casey, and more Chicago buds up to sing. A barnstorming delight.
During Henry’s opening set, people bopped-n-validated the new songs. We chose joy. (Corny but true.)
This week was full of bureaucracy and baby: I went to the doctor, the DMV (x3), and voted in Chicago’s municipal election, to fill out the bureaucratic quotient. That was balanced by meeting Sima and Dorian’s baby, Zulal. Wowee. Casey and I sat with her for a while and marveled at her tiny-yet-huge, remarkably calm presence.
Unbelievable, yet we better believe her. 😍
I’m on my way to Texas now to record with a friend. YAHOO. I got about two hours of sleep; now I’m riding sweet, sweet O’Hare airport adrenaline.
Two announcements before I go:
Rodney Crowell announced an album yesterday, The Chicago Sessions, produced by my dad. The excellent John Perrin (of present-day NRBQ!) and I play drums on it. One single, “Everything At Once,” on which John plays drums, is out now.
Casey’s band Case Oats is playing a kinda “rare” show in Chicago on March 18 at Golden Dagger. We haven’t played at home in many months because we’re slowly, oh-so-slowly, finishing up our first album. It’s a two-band bill with Dusk from Appleton, whom we LOVE. Tickets here. (By the way, Casey and I recorded a video at Eli Schmitt’s home concert series Here Now last summer. I never posted about it, but I like it. Here it is if you wanna see 25 minutes of Casey and me singin’.)
Thank you! Hug!

Spencer! You have so many new music projects going it's hard to keep up! I have a radio show that focuses on new music. Send me some if you would like to, if you want to. No big whoop.
Hi Spencer. Thank you for another enjoyable post! Two things: I think spelled Casey's name wrong when I commented on your last post: apologies for that. Does she prefer Casey or Case? Also - Sima's baby is one of the cutest little babies ever. That photo squashes my heart - in the best way!
