Nice walk on the boardwalk in Wilmington, North Carolina. I liked to look at the battleship parked on the other side of the harbor there, the USS North Carolina. (A little on the nose, parking the North Carolina in North Carolina. But you do you, naval museum association.)
It’s hard to believe there are only two shows left on this tour. We’re in Durham today, playing our own headlining show, with support from Cameron Winter. His music makes us faint and fall over. It makes us scream and look bug-eyed at our partners. Are you hearing this? It makes us feel feeble and universal. It makes me want to write more songs and better ones. (Katie described his music so well back in January.) We get to watch him play in t-minus one hour.
We ate good food yesterday. Liam said, about the venue kitchen staff, “love clocked in.” Now we can’t stop saying that. Love clocked in. When someone cares, when the food is flavorful, when the songs communicate, when the mix is mixed, when the kitchen is cleaned and the band is spending time together, looking each other in the eye—love clocked in.
I also heard that love takes miles.
I learned about Cameron Winter from Katie’s Substack and am positively obsessed! Such a unique songwriter. Man! And Love Clocked In is a phenomenal phrase and I love the background. You can tell when food, music, and any art is made with love and that is such an elegant way to acknowledge it. Thanks, Spencer! Been enjoying this tour diary immensely
Thanks for taking the time to check in, Spencer. Think of these as your early notes for the inevitable book you're going to write about your touring career.
