Thank you for writing this—what an interesting synchronicity! I’ve been deep in research for a yoga therapy course, exploring the whirling aspect of dervish practice. This morning I found myself down a rabbit hole studying Amazigh trance rituals that bear a striking resemblance to Sama. I’ve been especially curious about historical moments where the Mevlevi Order may have crossed paths with Berber mystics. A friend who I’ve had for 40 years very clearly has a personality disorder. She spins round and round, never reaching out to try and stop the spinning, never reaching inside to find its source. It feels like a disability, but that doesn’t stop me from getting frustrated with her. Is the capacity for self-reflection different for each person? It seems so.
