Hi Spencer! All 10 of your drumming clips were very interesting and very entertaining. As I have told you before, Gene Krupa was known as the premier drummer of his time. Mr. Krupa, as outstanding as he was, was almost as good as you. Keep up the good work.
Disclaimer: I am a Wilco/Tweedy/Tweedy Show super fan and a bit of a dork - but here goes!
Spencer, many times I have wanted to reach out and tell you how magical your drumming is to me, so I am using this as my opportunity. Watching you play drums on the Tweedy Show, in YouTube clips of Tweedy, etc. is captivating to me. What enthralls me is that you look so graceful and serene when you play, yet you produce such powerful and sophisticated sound. Watching you play, I frequently find myself looking like a perplexed dog, with my head cocked sideways and brows knitted - trying to figure out why what I'm seeing is so different from what I am hearing. "Is it his kick drum? Is it his mic set up?" I ask myself these questions, but I think the answer is that you are just a phenomenal drummer, who plays with such visible ease. Thank you for sharing this!🖤
This could be a whole chapter of your Dad’s book, “How to Write One Song!” It’s already inspired me to come up with a couple of different tunes for the next album. Thanks so much. This is an amazing gift!
All of this -- the drumming, the technology, the current state of music, community, and commerce, the pure nature of pattern and rhythm, the individuality of regional drumming -- BEGS for a documentary. Which, with a nice PBS grant, you’d be a perfect writer and presenter. I can see it clear as day.
You make such an important point in your last footnote that I want to highlight it. So much of the "life" we attribute to a form of music is in relation to its commercial impact, such is the grip of the music biz. But as long as someone somewhere is playing it, the music has life - and if someone else is listening, so much the better!
Hey, Jerome! I don’t see you in my subscriber list. But if you are somehow, go ahead and click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of your email. And there’s no refund to be had because you haven’t paid for anything, hehe.
Interesting statement: “Music evolves but it isn’t Darwinian.”….to be honest, I find it difficult to believe we came out of the sea, 40 trillion years ago, and I’m not a “God” created the earth and Adam and Eve guy….I tend to believe visitors from other galaxies is more plausible than the two former ideas, but I’m a strange one.
Question: I can understand your drum loops being digital for convenience sake, but are people still using analog tape as the master or is that a thing of the past?
Spencer, you have influenced me... the way you set your sticks down on the snare after a song on The Tweedy Show, well, that's how I now place my eating utensils on my plate after a meal. Gently, perpendicular, and a little bit hanging off the edge. Also, if one were to use your loops, would you want to hear it?

Hello Peter Miller! Your appearances on the Tweedy Show make me so happy. Thank you for your wisdom, your sense of humor, and for being yourself!

How cool! I always thought - wish I could jam with such a talented drummer like Spencer and now I can. Thank you kindly for this!

This is such a cool idea! Thanks for sharing this with the world, Spencer!

Spencer, this is so interesting!! I can’t wait to listen, and I love your writing!
Is that The Spencer shuffle on track 3?
Great idea! Thank you for sharing <3
They sound great. Love those cymbals (think they are cymbals?) and their subtle shifting pitch on 101a! Outstanding project.
