Hey Spencer,

May I recommend “String Theory” by David Foster Wallace to fortify your new interest in tennis? DFW was an excellent tennis player, may he rest in peace.

Thanks Spencer. I played a lot of sports in my time, at competitive levels, and the times when I played my best it was because there was a song in my head, a driving rhythm, a melody…I’ve always felt there was a misunderstood link between music and sports, which you have captured in this post so succinctly. Sorry we missed the tour stop at the Woodland Park Zoo! Enjoy that return to normalcy- whatever that is.

Looking forward to catching that RiotFest set! If you guys have time earlier in the afternoon, come check out The Armed on the Rise Stage at 3. I’ll be the nervous lefty playing his first full show in some years 😊

Hi Spencer, I'm glad to hear that you're on your way home. I'm looking forward to getting together whenever possible. I remember many years ago, when I was dating a professional tennis player, that the sound she made hitting the ball with her racket did sound something like a third or fourth cousin to a drum sound. I'm glad everything worked out on your very long tour. See you soon. Love, Zaid

Hey Spencer. This is so interesting. I love football (soccer) and always have. I’ve struggled to articulate the reasons in the past but I find watching it played at the highest level deeply moving and truly beautiful. I’d never really tied it to music and rhythm before so your post has really got me thinking. Anyway, thanks for wakening up my mind this morning

Seriously, a polo shirt?! We have to talk..confession, after living in Lawence, KS and through Bulls Jordan years, am total basketball junkie. The Rotties would beg to be put outside when they heard NBA theme music because mommy was going to start screaming at the TV…

Great post. Tell Dad I really think he should cover Avant Gardner by Courtney B. Love the Heaven tho. Excited to hear it.

🎾Wimbledon next ! Happy you got to see the artistry without focusing on the poshness. I am so grateful to my Mother teaching me tennis at age 5 on. Cherished memories watching Wimbledon and the Open together.

Another beautiful Sima record indeed. Thank you.

spencer, thanks for another great post from the road. given some of your mother & father's posts i wonder how they (and casey)will take the news of you becoming the fan of another of the sportsballs. re: the rhythm and musicality of sports you reminded me of a classic piece that an a talented editor and talented sound designer/composer and more did to show how sport, music and editing all have a musicality to them. here's one from the archives of 2001. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNSepdhwnm8 - sorry to have missed waxahatchee on this tour.

There are few sporting events I enjoy as much as the first few days of the US Open. Bypass the expensive Arthur Ashe tickets and get a (relatively) inexpensive grounds pass and you have first come, first serve seats to amazing tennis in all the smaller courts from a few feet away. Plus NYC at that time of year and all it affords. Glad you are a fan of the game now!

So cool that you are now a tennis fan. Isn’t it fun??? I’ve been watching Grand Slam tournaments since I was a kid-we’re talking Johnny Mac days. Such a crazy sport where the gals are paid as much as the guys. Hard to find that anywhere. Cheers to you and many more GS events. Wimbledon is calling….

I love when musicians "discover" sportsball, or at least those who haven't previously expressed much seeming interest in the ways of orbs and nets and throws and catches! Tennis does have an odd sort of rhythmic, almost calming aspect as a spectator. I wonder if that's why so many people seem to like having it on TV as background noise. Glad you got to go to the U.S. Open. One thing I never got to do when I lived in the NYC area and definitely regret. Anyway, welcome home (and go Bears)! Too soon? ;-)

Oh no - I definitely don’t and wouldn’t! Talking strictly about the edge-of-town truck stop zones. That’s all :)
